Dr. Jonny: Welcome to the first episode of our “Success Leaves Clue” Series, where we interview highly successful doctors and dentists who have also included investing in real estate as part of their repertoire. Today, I have a very special guest, Dr. Ryan Mark, based out of Northern New Jersey. He has achieved tremendous success in his career, and he’s here to share his journey with us.  Dr. Maher, please tell us about some of your achievements and accolades to give our audience some context.

Dr. Ryan Maher: Thank you for having me. Over my 26-year career, I’ve owned and sold seven dental practices. I’ve experienced various aspects of dentistry, including working for multiple dentists, having partners, and owning practices both by myself and with partners. I’ve been through it all, and I can relate to those starting their dental careers. If you find it tough, it’s a sign you’re on the right path.

Dr. Jonny: It’s clear you’ve had a diverse journey in dentistry. Can you tell us about your transition into real estate investment?

Dr. Ryan: When I started, I lacked knowledge in business administration and investing. I made mistakes throughout my career. Within a year and a half, I decided to buy a second practice. In 1997, I graduated, and in 1998, I bought my first dental practice. In 2000, I acquired my second. It’s been quite a journey.

Dr. Jonny: Balancing work and life must have been challenging with multiple practices. How did you manage it?

Dr. Ryan: Thankfully, my wife was very understanding and supportive. She allowed me to pursue my passion, even though it meant less time at home. I was passionate about what I did, and her belief in me kept me going. It was tough, but it was worth it.

Dr. Jonny: Now, with your extensive career, how does your work-life balance compare?

Dr. Ryan: The key to my success and improved work-life balance is the incredible team surrounding my practices. It’s not just the people in the office but also my investment team. I’m making more money now, working fewer hours because of efficiency and diversified investments. Real estate has played a significant role in my financial growth.

Dr. Jonny: That’s impressive. What advice do you have for dentists looking to get into real estate investment?

Dr. Ryan: First, be humble and acknowledge that you don’t know everything. Seek advice from experts in the field. Second, educate yourself extensively. Read books, listen to industry leaders like Tony Robbins, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Grant Cardone. Third, focus on building your reputation rather than just your bank account. Building a strong name will open doors and opportunities.

Dr. Jonny: Can you recommend three resources for our audience, in no particular order?

Dr. Ryan: Certainly. Three resources I recommend are:

  • Books: Gary Vaynerchuk’s books are full of valuable insights.
  • YouTube: Kevin, a young YouTuber who delves into real estate and stock investing, is worth following.
  • Your Network: Don’t underestimate the power of networking. Connect with professionals who can guide you on your investment journey.

Dr. Jonny: Thank you, Dr. Maher, for sharing your incredible journey and insights into the world of dentistry and real estate. Your story is an inspiration to many.

Dr. Ryan: Thank you for having me, and kudos to you for the platform you’ve built. It’s invaluable for those looking to make their money work for them.

About

Dr Janatha Withanachchi received his DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) at Howard University College of Dentistry with distinction and completed his post-doctoral training in Endodontics at New York University.

Soon after graduating he immediately began investing in single family houses (SFH). After several investment SFHs he realized that this was not the best way to create meaningful cash flows; nor to accumulate wealth. This led him to commercial real estate which he soon found was a better way at building significant cash flows and creating wealth.

By identifying emerging markets, partnering with only the best sponsors in the country he began acquiring primely located, value-add apartment buildings through apartment building syndication. He is a self-made millionaire and has created substantial passive income through leveraged real estate investments. He has syndicated over $50+ Million dollars worth of real estate and is the Vice President of Business Operations in a top tier vertically integrated real estate company that owns and manages 2000+ apartment units valued over $400 Million dollars.

He has jump-started many of his family, friends and fellow doctor associates on a predictable path to financial freedom.
